To reduce improper fractions, always take the bottom number(the lowest one) and figure out how many times it can go into the top number(the higher number)... So 3 into 17= 5 then your left over is 2. the way to write the answer would be 5 2/3. This the easiest way I explain it to my son.

You divide 17 by 3. That will give you about 5.6. This means 3 will go into 17 five times, and there is some left over.

So what is 3 times 5? 15. You take 17 and subtract 15, and you get 2, so you put that over the original demoninator, making your final answer 5 and 2/3.

17/3= the way to do it is to find a number that you can multiply 3 to and that comes as close as possible to the top number = 17. in this case, it would be five, since 3 x 5 = 15 and 3 x 6 = 18. five is close enough but it doesnt go over like 6 does. so now subtract the 15 from the seventeen and that gives you to so the answer would be 5 and 2/3. hope it helps.

17/3, yes you divide. 3 goes in to 17 five times (3*5=15) with a remainder of 2. Put the remainder over the denominator and your answer is 5 2/3.
