these cramps hit at night when I am trying to sleep. sleep is something that has been a chore for the past 3 months

In addition to the cal-mag tablets, you might increase your eating of fruit to at least three servings a day for potassium. A deficiency of this mineral also can contribute to leg cramps.

Nocturnal leg cramps can usually be helped with a good calcium/magnesium supplement taken before bedtime. I've never heard of them occurring around the ankles - usually people complain about them in the calves. But cal/mag is generally good for any muscle cramping.
