Jellyfish can exist in any depth of water, but generally they are off the shore. Like in or near a coral reef. According to people who have been stung, they say it is worse than a bee sting. It actually causes the wound and surrounding area to burn like fire. If you are stung many times, you could even die from the toxins.

I have even seen small fresh water jellyfish in Grand Lake in Oklahoma. They are very, very small and can't possibly inflict any formidable injury.

That will obviously depend on the species involved. The most dangerous to man is the Box Jellyfish (Chironex fleckeri) from the Great Barrier Reef. I once saw a documentary on this species, the principal researcher was curious to experience what the pain was like from its venom. He draped a small section of tentacles across his forearm and he felt excruciating pain almost immediately so you could imagine getting draped by the full length of its tentacles will swimming!!? A few people have died from this species which breeds in shallow mangrove waters.

All jellyfish stings are painful. A few of my friends have experienced stings. Every year around April we get an infestation of the Portuguese Man-O'-War....and yes, they do venture into shallow water and often get stranded upon the shore. They are dangerous in the water and on the land because their tentacles don't lose their ability to sting immediately.

The pain of some jellyfish, like the irukanji, can be so excrutiating that even the maximum dose of morphine pain killer legally allowed barely takes the edge off the pain. It can be so painful people will actually kill themselves to stop the pain if they were not in hospitals and watched all the time to prevent suicide.
