The reason I ask is because the past month or so, in the midwest US, we have had a lot of cloudy days. My cactus doesn't get any direct sunlight except whatever light is being filtered through the clouds. Do I have to buy a grow light, which I know are very expensive or will a regular lamp do? If a regular lamp will do, will a regular light bulb be okay or does it have to be halogen/fluorescent??

No its not the same but I'll tell ya getting grow lights is not as expensive as you think. Florescent lights full spectrum sun will work just fine. The beauty of those lights is A those cost next to nothing. I bought the ballast for 10 bucks at Lowes and the light was like I think 12 bucks for one. It kicks off 40 watts of light. I use Florescent to clone and during the summer months. So my advice to u is, if your pocket can't handle HPS lights then go for florescent. Get a shop ballast from OSH, Lowes or home depot and ask for cool 40 watt bulbs to fit the the ballast you can't go wrong and your plants will love you for it. Also you can keep them on 24x7 because they don't' use a lot of power so your electric bill won't go flying in the air. Hope this helps

Artificial light will assist any plant to grow.
Grow lights are specially formulated to provide more of the type of light that plants need, so a grow light would be better.
