It's about working smarter not harder anymore to get ahead. The majority of businesses could care less if you work yourself into the ground. They'll just have someone else in your spot the next day.
I say do what you can in 8 hrs and then go home to your family/friends. Don't get me wrong on occasion overtime is necessary to complete projects, but not all the time. And you should get away from your desk for at least 30 mins to eat your lunch or just walk.
It's all about balances in life.

That is too bad and sorry to hear. For example, my day starts at 7:30 am and ends at 4:00 pm. This includes an hour lunch. You are in the wrong business or need to plan your day accordingly. You should try to forecast your week out, developing a plan for each day and what you need to accomplish.

I work 7:30 to 4:30 with an hour for lunch. But everyone I work with pretty much works the hours that they want. I'm the first one in and first one out!

I work 8-5. I mean, technically I get up at 6:45 and don't get home until 5:45, and I take an hour lunch.

i work 9-6 with an hour lunch...you just gotta improve your negotiation skills or look for a job that doesn't say "looking for a highly motivated person." or something along those lines usually that means they will work you like a dog.

I guess that that's the shift of people in New York City.
MY dad works from six o'clock A.M. to ten o'clock P.M...workaholic with a terrible shift. However, he makes $600.00 per hour...which is very nice.
