Cleaning alloy wheels?

What's the best stuff to clean alloy wheels with? Is there anything I can put on them to stop all the tar from the roading sticking to them?

I use Tesco's alloy wheel cleaner, however if I read the Honda manual, it says that they come ready coated and I should only use soap and water - never worked!

I'm affraid nobody has ever really succeded in solving this problem. The dust created from brake pad /shoe wear is quite abrasive and slightly acidic when wet and corrodes the alloys if not cleaned regularly.

The type of cleaner the car show rooms use is again basically a diluted acid. sprayed onto the wheels, wait a minute and then using a high pressure washer it's blasted off. Obviously the less spokes there are the easier it is to clean. Oxy-Gel kitchen cleaner is actually very good as it's an oxygenated bleach and cheap from the local supermarkets, but watch your eyes and plants.

Becareful if you use a spray wax afterwards that you don't spray the brake pads / discs or it might impair their performance.

To prevent build up just rinse them off every other day with a pressure washer. only taked a few minutes.

You can clean your wheels with a product like Eagle one Alloy wheel cleaner or Castrol Superclean for wheels. Once you have your wheels bright and clean, you can wax them, just like you do with the rest of your car. This will keep stuff from sticking to them. But you will have to wax you wheels more often, the heat form your brakes will wear down the wax quicker.

Beleave me when I say I have tryed it all, crome polish, tar removerer, all the stuff on the market.
Here is the best I have found.
Therre is a new one out It is a little red ball you put in your drill. It is put out by Mothers mag and chrome polish. I have alloy chrome wheels on my GoldWing motorcycle and I say thi is it.

You put it in your drill and poke it all over in the wheel all over and I have never seen anything like it. It brought back the shine like nothing I have ever tryed. And it is not hard to do.
You dont need to scrub, just let the drill spin it and wow what a shine.

I have tried several different brands, and the best I have found is Autoglym.

Be sure to follow the instructions carefully, because all of these wheel-cleaning products are quite powerful - don't inhale the fumes.

The simple solutions are always best. Cover the alloys with lemon juice, leave for 10 mins then rinse off. You'll be amazed.

Clean then with hydroloric acid mixed with water at 30%. Wonder wheels costs 7 quid and is 20%.I use 30% and it brings them up a treat.Keep the hose on your tyre while you do it to dilute it on contact with the rubber and for christ sake wear goggles.

i would suggest going to your nearest hand car wash and ask the attendents what they use, because i take my 06 zafira every week and they use alloy wheel cleaner there, not sure what it is because theres no label on the spray tub but it does work and it make wheels look great
