I have this snail problem and I am getting tired of vacuuming as many as I can and then refilling the tank only to have to do it again in a couple weeks.
I have a smaller (10 gal) tank that isn't being used. If I set this 10 gal tank up and move the fish (maybe 10 small fish)from the big tank into the small one and then in the big one put hot water, (tap) fill it, wait a while and then clean every thing and set it up again will this get rid or the snail problem..
I don't want to use any chemicals
I am open to suggestions.
Thanks
Swede

Set up a whole new tank in the 10 gallon. You don't need a pair of snails to breed. Let the 29 gallon dry out completely, then put the fish back.

You do not need to keep a pair just one will cause an issue. They lay eggs by the hundreds at a time, and they do this by themselves. If you have (A) snail it could cause an infestation. So if you do not want to fight with snail issue then get rid of all of them do not keep any or the problem will come back. Set the ten up put the fish in there and break down the 29 you do not need to use hot water just get it dry. these little suckers will be in the gravel as well as on the glass. To get rid of them there are chemicals that will do it. You can very easily use bleach all you need is a cupful per gallon after you remove everything. There is a product that will neutralize it as well it is called PRIME. Use it as directed and this is after you have used the bleach and rinsed everything off well. Then clean with water and the prime. Then it will be safe for the return of the fish. Remember That ALL IT TAKES IS ONE (1).

Remove your fish from the big tank and put them in the 10 gallon. Boil everything in the other tank in plain water or salt water. If you have live plants get rid of them. My tank got infested from a plant I bought that had snails, at first I thought they were cute- but then they took over. If you don't boil everything and completely eradicate them they will be back and you'll have to start over. Good Luck

yes i would remove your fish and but them in the other tank. try cleaning with white vinegar ( it's safe to clean with) it helps hard water stains as well. be careful cleaning out the whole tank as you may upset the pH balance in your tank. but you are on the right track... snails can be eaten by the fish and make it safely through the digestive track so i might leave them in the small tank for a bit until you feel they have fully digested there food and then put them back in your tank after deep cleaning and running it empty with stress coat etc.... I hate snail infestations and it is tough to get rid of. I feel you pain

i've got even have been given a 10 gallon on the 2d, so i don't see you as a "stupid amateur fishkeeper". in case you had a a million gallon bowl on the different hand...nicely ahem. The snails are hermaphrodites, they are in a position to reproduce on their very own, and can right now over run a tank. there are particular fish you will get to maintain the inhabitants down, in spite of the undeniable fact that that is probable unwise to function something with out understanding what different fish you have. they're additionally lil' buggers to kill. I study an editorial some weeks in the past, they tried to kill off a tank of snails and failed miserably. They tried boiled water, they tried to dry them out, they even tried making use of bleach. there is the lettuce technique, you weigh down a splash eco-friendly lettuce into the water and circulate away it over night. Then interior the morning you do away with it, place it in a bag, and positioned it interior the freezer for an hour or 2. this might kill the snails on there. i don't understand approximately your annual restart of your fish tank. Do you recommend you rip it down and scrub all of it? if so that is unwise, the efficient micro organism needed to interrupt down ammonia and nitrite may be destroyed, making your fish circulate by way of each and all the Aquarium cycle issues unnecessarily. With customary tank maintenance, 25% water ameliorations and gravel vac., changing clear out cartrages/media might recommend you does not ought to take each and everything down and scrub it. ---------------------------------- extra: stay far off from any chemical components to kill off the snails, you will merely finally end up with one hundred fifty-200 ineffective snails on your tank, and a lot greater burried on your substrate. those will decompose and reason all forms of nasty **** on your fish.

Empty the tank and let it dry out completely. It will kill off the snails you missed. Takes about a week or two to dry out.
