You have to FDISK and Format it.

If your device manager recognizes the drive, then jumper settings shouldn't be messed with. You COULD have two drives set to master or one master, one slave... the computer has two controllers and each can have a master and a slave connection so strictly speaking, the first comment is wrong.

What are your computer specifications? what is the capacity of the harddrive?
there are two limitations of harddrives' capacity, it is just becausa of your computer's mainboard (and sure BIOS) and your OS. firs limit is 32 GB and the second limit to 132 GB. in your definition I can understand there is no BIOS problem, in starting up you can see your hard drive identification, but not in OS(windows 98)

another reason may be jumper settings, but if there is a confict( wrong jumper settings) you may not see both drives even in starting up or just one(yours)

open the box
select a cable you are going to plug your drive onto
assume the one with the master hdd
set the second one to slave by looking at the top diagram fix drive in place connect cables
boot system win 98se will recognise it providing it is not over 250 gb
you do not need to fdisk , hdd are plug and play ,you need to format when in windows

Make sure the jumpers on the second drive are set to Slave

Ok, this is an easy one, make sure the jumpers are properly set, then you must fdisk the hard drive to set it's partition, and then format it so it can be used!

If your drive doesn't come with a driver disk you may need to download them. Contact the drive manufacturer. I can't remember if '98 is new enough to not need drivers.
