We have a family of rabbits who dug a hole in the back yard and have babies. We are getting a dog though and want to be able to let the dog run free without eating rabbits. How do we get them to relocate without killing them or putting the babies in danger?

Why would you want to trade bunnies for a dog?! Sigh, anyways bunnies do make for a tasty stew, so if you are a good shot then you could humanely shoot the parent bunnies. I have no idea what you would do with the baby bunnies..

If you're serious about getting rid of them, then you'll probably end up killing the babies no matter what you do. Any sort of ultrasonic emitter to drive away the adults will just force them to abandon their babies to starvation. If you approach their den too much they may flee for good, again leaving their babies to starve. If you truly care for these bunnies then you should wait for the babies to mature before you try to drive them out.

I had rabbits under my shed despite my dog who is a real barker. They finally moved out after a few months then a skunk moved in. Just start disturbing the area around the hole - chase them and make them feel afraid then they will relocate.

In passing conversation say to them "look where getting a dog soon and he's going to be running the backyard from now on...I'm sorry you guys are going to have to find somewhere else to live". If that doesn't work you'll have to catch them and put them in your next door neighbors yard so you can visit the extended family :)

Hey...just call Elmer Fudd and invite him over and turn him loose on them...yup...he's your man.
Just kiddin' maybe you could call a humane animal org.and explain the situation...I'm sure that if they were not able to physically help you rid them, they may have some good suggestions. Best of luck!

There's a DVD out on this very topic, you can rent it at your local video store: Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

You can see the U.K. trailer at the link below.

look under "pest control" in the yellow pages. seriously, there are companies that advertise safe, humane removal of rodents, raccoons, rabbits, etc...

the funnest way is to chase them around. but the easiest is to carefully get them out of the hole (ask a fire department for help) and set them loose in an area where they'll be safe. this happened to me. only we had frogs (and lots of em)
