If the mileage is around a pre-set check-up time it could pop on. Such as 30,000 or 60,000.
Also there are some problem that will not necessarily make the car run funny. An example would be a bad oxygen sensor. The car will still run fine. It just will use a little more gas than it did before.

Usually when ever a check engine light comes on you are dealing with a sensor problem. So with that said you can go ot Auto Zone if you have one and have them run whats called a code test to see why the light is coming on. Its free!!! It could be EGR valve to a map sensor not always are you going to notice something acting up, but it is something that is going to get worse then you will probably notice it!!!

Sometimes it seems as nothing is wrong but it could be a sensor malfunction here and there-the first thing to do is double check your gas cap is tight, thats something that is minor that will cause the check engine light to go on. You can go to AutoZone and they will hook it up for you for free and tell you what the code means..
