I agree the punishment should fit the crime. However, in many cases prisoners are paroled and put on probation. Rehabilitation is what is necessary. Many of these people have been prison for a short time and not necessarily a violent crime. In my mind, everyone gets a second chance to make their life right. As for the far more serious crimes. Only time will tell if rehabilitation is possible. Repeat offenders are difficult to rehabilitate, but it is possible.

Punishment has no basis in a society that has any intellect.
The people who create crime are uneducated and in a majority of cases mentally ill. What good does it do to punish someone who could be a viable part of society.
Educating felons has been shown to make them able to be productive. Treating those who are mentally ill or addicts also makes a more productive person.
Granted there are people who no matter how much education and treatment they receive the desire to harm others will be in the fore front of their behavior.
We as a society must attempt to change a system that is overwhelmed by recidivism showing the present methods are woefully inadequate

The are punished, but since most are to be released into society, and may be your new neighbor, they had better be rehabilitated as well. Or you or I could be a future victim.

Depends on the crime. I don't want violent criminals on the street. There is proof that child-molesters are never "rehabilitated". Can't we put all of the violent criminals on an island somewhere & let them kill each other & rehabilitate the ones we can?

Punished and put to death. This is not a harsh answer. If you opine differently, think how you would feel if you child were raped or murdered and the assailant was set free because he claimed to be "rehabilitated." I think people have certain opinions but then when it happens to them, their opinions change.
