Societal mores. It is basically an accepted culture for young "men" to get the ladies and the women should stay docile and ignorant. Some parents may not realize that they do this, but it is very hurtful to the culture. You have women dating older men, and getting pregnant, not even knowing the "how" or why. Then they catch these advanced diseases and are left clueless and unhappy. If you ask me, the men need to be instructed on how to treat a human being and the woman need to be told about the birds and the bees and how to protect herself as well.

Obviously your parents do not want you to get Pregnant and give you ideas. If they were smart (no offense) ,they would talk to you since it can be done by accident. Trust me parenting is not an easy task, Some girls will take the context and think it is ok. that is not what a parent wants they are being protective. In my opinion giving the condoms is like saying go out and party they probably realize now they have done that with your brother and do not wish to make the same mistake twice.

It should be easier and far more important to talk to girls. Girls should be getting the birds and bees talk from around 3rd/4th grade in school. Since most schools warn girls about menstrating. It's the best time to talk to your girls then and teach them your values. It's very poor that your parents gave your brother condoms, this tells him. Go out and have sex. However, I doubt you knew nothing about sex until 14. If that is the case you lived a very sheltered life.

i got that talk when i was 13 but mostly i figured it out from reading boys are more likely to have sex first before a girl loses her virginity so parents feel a boy should know more since at 13 they can't control their hormones and a girl can a little more better

IMy personal opinion, and it's just my opinion is I , feel that we as parents when it comes to our daughters they may feel that the daughter may get the wrong imprssion of the conversation and may feel that we are giving you the impression that we are saying that it's okay. I feel it might just be a gender thing.

they think that girls need to be protected more than boys, but they are really putting us in danger by leaving us clueless.

I know, it's a complete double standard. Learn as much as you can. At least you'll make better choices in telling your kids (if you have any). :)
