Volkswagen specifies 5W40 oil in the 2003 TDI.

The change interval will be specified in your owner's manual, use the 'severe duty' guidelines.

I prefer Mobil 1 or Amzoil, pricey, but worth it. They are Group IV synthetics, while Rotella is a Group III.

Any oil that meets CI-4 specifications (ask the counterman @ your local auto parts store to show you how to tell) will work just fine in your motor, however, whether they are conventionals or synthetics. Synthetics will provide a higher level of protection, though.

Look for oil suitable for diesel engines (read label in oil container), if you live in a cold climate use multigrade. For example I have a diesel Mercedes Benz and I prefer to use Rimula D SAE40. it is an oil sold by Shell. It is very good.
How often¿ could be every 5000 km with the oil filter.
If you could find a manual of this car, it will tell you all the pertinent information.

Look under the hood there should be a paper attached to the shroud that has the oil weight attached and how many quarts. I would change it every 5000 miles

Though I recommend Mobil 1 Synthetic 5w30 I would say to refer to your owners manual. with most synthetic oils you can safely go 5,000 miles on your oil.
