I say Ed Snider. Messier doesn't have the law or business background required to do the job, whereas Snider has a long history in sports business and has been considered for the position.
I have absolute respect for the Canadian people, so my next comment isn't meant as a slur. One would expect that a respected member of the NHL community would be the best choice to run the league yet, in the hands of Canadian power, the NHL has morphed it's division alignment in a very odd way, toys with the America vs. Canada alignment, thumbs it's collective nose toward American teams, holds grudges at the expense of league growth, and has a lot of responsibility for the lack of popularity. To have a commissioner fresh off of NBA success seemed like a good idea at the time, but unless a miracle occurs and the league has a 50% increase in popularity, it is time to remove him and to scrap his plan.
That said, hockey is a regional sport that just doesn't have the drawing power of football, basketball, soccer, baseball, and racing. The league needs to shift teams and disband others so as to incorporate more Canadian locations and a few northern American cities too.

Messier's a good choice but I have an even better canadiate. Wayne Gretzky was a player for 20 years, exceutive director for Team Canada, part owner of the Phoenix Coyotes and now he's a coach. He's seen the game from so many perspectives. He has to know what's good for the game and what's not. Plus he's hockey's greatest ambassador. I think he'll be a great commissioner. GET LOST GARY BETTMAN!!!!!!

Messier is an ex coke head with no education. great player and team captain although he did squat for Vancouver.
I would nominate Ken Dryden, he has the education and is now a politician who is going for the Liberal leadership which is like being Kim Campbell after the Mulroney years.
I think Ken would make a great commish.
I agree someone please take Bob Cole back to the Rock and put him in an old peoples home bye!
As for Harry maybe we can trade him for the guy who does the TV announcing for Pittsburgh Penguins, I love hearing him on the high lights, 'Slap me silly Sidney Crosby just scored"
Jim Huston is the next CBC play by play guy just waiting for Bob Cole to be put out to pasture.

I think Messier would be incredible!
But actually, what they call "Commissioner" (which is what Bettman is) ... is as close to NHL President as you get.

I do think it's time for Bettman to retire.... but he just doesn't seem to be in a huge hurry for some reason.. :o/

Good choice - bob and Harry should retire sine bob can't see the players names anymore and Harry is always talking about his days as the worst coach of the Vancouver Canucks.
