If you want to use minerals, then you should do a geology project. But if you want to do an award-winning astronomy project, do one similar to what Victoria Hutchins did. She's also a 6th grader, and was second in all of California with a project that proved that the planets revolve around the sun (and not the earth) by observing the phases of the moon and Venus.

Check the link below to see her abstract. Do NOT copy this directly, but you should be able to do the same thing in your own words and do very well.

Also, different science fairs have different rules. I've judged them, and what's important is not necessarily a really cool project with gee-whiz results, but following the rules. We judges were forced to give some pretty plain projects pretty high scores because each step of the rules were followed exactly.

Good luck!

Have a look at the Lifter Project on Jnaudin. It's on a free scientific website run by a guy in France (but it's also in English) and has all sorts of amazing stuff.

The 'lifter' is a machine that has no moving parts at all but flies only on electricity. It costs about three dollars to build one and takes about a day. The power comes from any old computer monitor, which you can usually get for nothing. But you will need an adult to help you because electricity can be dangerous.

Have a look at the Lifter Project Log, which shows pictures and videos from all over the world. Several kids have built them for science projects and you can bet it will just amaze everyone!!

I built one myself and I'm not expert! And yes -- it really works!

Here is the link:

NOTE: This site shares all information free. It is NOT a business.

Have fun, and make sure you have an adult connect things for you and supervise, okay? Be careful and be safe!

I have an idea. If you determine mass acceleration values within our planet, you shall find that at 0.717 miles from the very center of our planet a mass would (if it were able to be released there and free to move) accelerate to within 25 miles per second of that of the speed of light n one second. At the 0.716 mile location, it would exceed the speed of light. Seek to find what is beyond the 0.716 mile location. In our sun the distance is 400 miles from its center when a mass exceeds the speed of light in one second.

Do a lot of research and explain why Pluto is no longer considered a planet... with a model of the solar system, of course.

Build a time machine. Don't think you can't because you're just a sixth grader. You can do anything if you set your mind to it!
