Thank you all so much for the good ideas!

I'm thinking maybe I'll go with a sort of slingshot, but my bro was in this class a few years ago and thats what he did, so I have to be carefull, i don't want my teacher to think I coppied him...

another thing: I guess I'm not that strong, and I'm worried I won't be able to pull a slingshot back far enough...

does anyone know how hard they are to use?
I don't want to make it and then find out the cantalouple splats on the ground in front of me 'cause I'm not strong enough to pull the slingshot back far enough...

A catapult may be the best way if you only have to launch it 10 meters. You may want to look into building a trebuche, which will be able to launch it much further; however, is much more complicated. Another idea could be to make a canaloupe sized potato gun from PVC pipe. Such potato gun designs could be found on the Internet and could be scaled up to launch a cantaloupe rather than a potato.

If only 10 meters, the best bet is to use a slingshot type system. Attach two garage door springs to a firm Y post. Make a cradle for the canteloupe, pull back to the desired depth and use a firing pin for the release. Materials $40, canteloupe - $2, ability to reuse - priceless.

Try making a mega slingshot, of course the band must be really strong and thick and have something heavy to attach it to on either side or able to be affixed to the ground in some way.

Hmmm... well, if it's only ten meters, then you could just use a catapult system. It's more accurate than a trebuche, but not as powerful. I would look up specific statistic sites maybe on google? Just kidding! Yahoo.

if you can use compressed air, that would be the easiest and most efficient
