How do you know they haven't already? Perhaps key people have been replaced with replicants, and they'll soon move on to the rest of the populace soon...

Seriously, we are so far away from something like this it's unlikely it would ever happen, for several reasons:

1) It's questionable whether we'll ever be able to create artificial life on a level that could actually threaten us in this way. We would never hand over that much power to a machine or group of machines that didn't have our own level of intelligence, because we would want to be certain it could handle the responsibilities that we currently bear ourselves. So until then, robots would be a servant class, only smart enough to perform specialized programmed functions -- you might be able to have a maid, for instance, but the machine wouldn't be able to do repairs around the house, or leave the house to do groceries.

2) What with human paranoia the way it is, we'd never create a machine that sophisticated and powerful without instilling some version of Asimov's Three Laws of Robotics into it, with no way to change or delete them. We'd also be darned sure to include a failsafe of some sort to ensure that even if it somehow got around the three laws, you'd still be able to shut it all down.

3) More than likely, by the time humanity would have created machines that sophisticated, mankind will probably have already killed itself off in one extremely unpleasant way or another.

This is why they never show George W. Bush from the back. They don't want you to see the key that they wind him up with.
