you need to be 100% effaced (meaning your cervix is softened enough for the child to come through) and 10 cm dialated (meaning your cervix is fully open to fit the babys head through)
But at 80% effaced and 3 cm dialated... most likely the woman would be having her baby within this week.

I'm a nursing student and I just had a baby. Lucky you, usually at 4 cm and 100% they say you are in the begining of labor, so your not far. However, as they say you can dilate overnight or over a few weeks. Effaced means how thin and short your cervix is (its usually thick and long). You can push at 10 centimeters and 100% effaced. Congrats, you may not have long to go!!!!

Think of your cervix as the skinny end of a pear...that part gets shorter (effacement) and then when you look at the stem part of the pear...the little hole has got to open up to ten centimeters to allow passage of the baby(dilation). 80% and 3cm is a favorable cervix for delivery. Good Luck!

It means that your cervix has opened up 3 cm. You need to get to 10 before you can start pushing.
Your cervix is a three-dimensional ring or tunnel. It not only dilates (through the center), but also thins out along its length. 0% means your cervix hasn't thinned at all, while 100% means it's completely thinned out.

it means you are in the first stage of labor. When you are fully effaced and 10 centimeters dilated, you will be able to give birth to a baby.
this site explains all 3 stages of labor in great detail.

depending on how fast you dialate, the baby is coming, effaced is the thinning of the cervix, all these things need to be complete to get the baby out. dialate needs to be 10 cm and effaced needs to be 100 percent. You need to be where ever you plan to deliver. Because child will arrive as soon as those goals are met.

you need the cervix 10 centimeters to start pushing, to get the baby's head out. I'm not sure about effaced!
