said oxygen earlier, but honestly a lot of bacteria (anaerobes and facultative anaerobes) don't use oxygen and often have nitrogen or another element as their last electron acceptor. i would go over this a few more times until you understand the process, it kept showing up in all my college courses...over and over and over

tis true, it is oxygen. and if you're getting really technical, this is because oxygen is the final electron acceptor. tell your teacher that and they will be very impressed.
