Yes you can plant them topgether but they have different fertilizer requirements - guess martha didn't know that.
Hollys are acid loving and roses like it sweet. So give them space, fertilize for the bed for the roses but give the hollys a top dressing of an Ph lowering fertilizer. Miracle Grow has one in a blue box.
