Router - to network pc's together...doesnt require modem
Modem - to connect to internet.
Answer: no.... look at the brands out there.
My own preference is linksys or Dlink for router:
Look for router that has ethernet & usb extras to allow wired or wireless options.
MOdem: Cable or DSL.... i probably wouldnt bother networking pc's on a dialup, though Ive people who have.
My own setup is: 4 pc's on one router....with 2 pc's wirelessly connected to router...and one connected by wire (in same room as pc w/router.

The easiest way is to buy say a 4 port ethernet modem/router. It will allow you to network your computers and let all of them communicate with the internet.

no, all you need is a modem (i.e. DSL, CABLE modem) and any type of router should support any modem, different routers provide different things like firewall and hacker prevention.... and some provide only a certain number of ports that computers can connect to

if you are networking 2 computer to eachother then all you would need is a standard crossover cable. Now if you are trying to split an internet connection between two or more computers then you will need a router with a built in switch.
