I'm curious as to what restrictions there are to driving on the bonneville salt flats of Utah. I know some park roads go through the area, but I'm interested in driving at unrestricted speeds in this area, mainly along sanctioned speedway routes. Who may drive on these routes or roads and under what conditions?

During the actual speed trials - http://www.roadsters.com/races/#Bonneville only participants are allowed on the course.

Most of the rest of the year, the salt is covered by water.

If you hit it during a time between events and when it's dry, there's really nothing keeping you from driving onto the sand - follow the BLM directives http://thingstodo.com/states/UT/blm/bonneville.html and don't stray from designated roads/courses.

On the way there, you'll see hundreds of tracks from people who thought the salt looked solid, and paid for their mistake with a $200 tow bill.

For the most fun, enter one of the events and participate. It's definitely an experience!

There are no restrictions, they have even tested Bugatti Veron 16.4 2006, Bar Honda 2006 out there it is a great stretch. It is very natural and beautiful they lay restrition not to harm the beauty, not to test or race.
