Money was tight then, so they made do. My dad said that they had a lot of stews and soups and made things such as ketchup sandwiches. They didn't have money for going out to eat, they didn't have fast food, microwaves etc. They would go to the neighborhood market daily usually in the morning ( early so the wife had time to cook) If they were lucky had to get ice from the ice man for the ice box (it was considered a luxury to have a icebox.). They didn't have frigs like we have today. The neighborhoods were ethnic and the people brought their recipes from their native homeland for them to cook.
