Actually Jefferson didn't start the Democratic Party, in fact Jefferson called his party the Republicans.
The party under its present name was established by Andrew Jackson during the 1820s, but it traces its origins to Thomas Jefferson and the Republican Party in 1792, later referred to as the Democratic-Republican Party.
