I THINK you'll find that sugar (in crystalline form) is not usable to insects as food and therefore does not attract them. Not sure how precise you need to be.

Insects that like sweets will go crazy for sugar (ants and hornets). Those that like greasy things will not be interested (dung beetles and flies).
