Walk or ride to their home or write letters, just like in the old days.

My best friend now lives about an hour away and neither of us have long distance phone service, or cellphones. For a while, she had the internet and we would chat on instant messenger. And when she couldn't afford the internet anymore...we would just call each other from friends' cell phones whenever we had the chance. We've also written a few letters to inform each other of important stuff. And every now and then, we meet up with each other and hang out for a little bit. It's tough since she's my best friend, but she's definately worth the effort.

I don't have a landline phone OR a cell phone (I have one that works in the US, but I live in Canada). I haven't had a landline in about 5 years, and for over 3 years no cell phone either. I have the US cell phone for when I am traveling (its a prepaid kind) to see family in US.

I have cable internet where i live in Canada, as part of rent; and wi-fi for on the road. My family and friends all connect with me via internet.

Back in the 60's and 70's when there WAS no internet, no PC's, no cell phones, not even cordless phones, and at best, most houses had one landline, often a "partyline" shared with several neighbors, friends made plans at school, then met later as scheduled, or gathered in one of several spots around town to "hang out". Because of sharing the phone line with other houses, we werent allowed to just talk for ages on the phone, so you went to each others house, or "to town" and socialized face to face.

If you had friends or family a distance away, you wrote real snail mail letters, and rarely called them.

For emergencies, such as a family member in an accident, you sent telegrams via western union to notify other people, which were hand delivered to the door of the person you were notifying.

Personally, I prefer things the way they are today.
