I have a 96 Dodge Grand Caravan that has a transmission problem; it slips in 3rd gear and I can't drive it over 40mph. I need to get it back home (it's 40 miles away at work) and then sell it; but i need to do something about the tranny for a temp fix...it has the proper amount of tranny fluid in it but i wonder if there is an additive or "geri-rig" application I can easily make...any insights?

I had a similar problem with a Buick, I drove it to a quick lube place, they flushed the whole system, changed the filter, put in some additive with new fluid, I was able to get the vehicle back to the state I was living in. Cost me around eighty bucks.

There is no cheap and easy cure for a tranny. You will just have to drive it home at 39 mph, that would only take you a little over an hour. You can always try changing the filter, but I think it is too far gone now.

Throw a quart of Trans-x into it, drive it home at 40mph and get rid of it. It's not worth an expensive rebuild and unless you have all the specialized tools and knowledge to take on the job, you're better off getting one out of a wreck. But really, a 10 year old dodge minivan is probably close to death anyway.

not really.. but is it standard?
get it up to like 5000 rpms in 2nd and go right to 4th instead of third..
or you can buy my brothers 96 caravan for $2000 and take the tranny out :D

sounds like you could learn a very expensive lesson...you are not a mechanic, I know, it sounds insulting but wouldn't it be nice to have a warranty.as it is you will be paying for your auto tech education and not to fix the car...i would charge you 4 times as much because you messed with it...with each bolt you tak eout you know you are in over your head but you deny it and keep going... you will pay!!!

There are additives, but I am not sure they will work. Go to your local parts store and ask them.

cheap and easy...an oxymoron. take it in to a locally owned shop, and get it overhauled. will probably cost about 500.00
