Wealth, weapons and the ownership of land - and the ability to take the above from others (ie. armies and courts).

All symbols of authority represent specific traits of minds with authority. A mere existence of symbols cannot make people authoritative. The mind, and the philosophy, behind all authoritative systems have almost similar observance of certain universal values at work.
First of all a sense of purpose, or love for a cause, or compassion for fellow human being is required to create space in a person or in a authoritative group to accommodate thoughts of use or concern for people who are subjected to the authoritative regime
Than there are all important matters of discipline, punctuality, efficiency and acute sense of accountability and responsibility. If you for example look at the uniform, speed and posture of a policeman you will notice all these things at work behind the illustrious symbols and methods of conduct.

Symbols of authority will vary from person to person.
One individual might see a police officer in uniform as authority while a more criminal minded person would disagree. Someone who is religious might say a Crucifix while an atheist would not.
So I think symbols of authority are what we accept them to be.

In UK a judge in court wears a big wig and bangs a big mallet when he wants everyone to shut-up. HM Queen wears a crown. A police officer wears a helmet and carries a war club.

Cars, bank accounts, post-codes, ...blah blah blah. There are no symbols, just signifiers. Ignore them.

I would say the evil pound, shilling and pence unfortunately. We're completely ruled by money and what it can get us whether we need it, want it or have to have it anyway.

It must be the sword. Oh that the day would come when we will learn war no more and pound our swords into ploughshares.
