I have been washing Trainers in my washing machine for years. The cheap ones can fall apart, not only can the glue break down but the inner sole fall apart. The cheaper brands tend the use thick cardboard under the rubber inner sole and when it gets wet it brakes apart.
But all is not lost if that happens, buy the glue you use the fix puncher holes repairs on rubber bike tubes, this glue is stronger and more flexible to use to repair your Trainers.
If there is cardboard inside your Trainers and it gets damaged you can replace it. I use the rubber from the rubber mats that you use on your table to put your diner plates on. When they get old I don't throw them away. The mats make a perfect base inside your Trainer. They are flexible, thick, waterpoof, slightly spongy and easy to cut with scissors.
The good old catch 22 is!!!
Using hot water to wash your Trainers does a better job than cold water, but its the hot water that's more successful in breaking down the glue in the Trainers.
As you have been reading in all the advice above, it depends on the quality of the Trainer

I do it all the time. Ususally I put them to be washed with the toilet rugs or the clothes i take the dust with. Good brands such as Rebook, Addidas, Nike and Puma they come out beautifuly cleaned and they look brand new. I haven't had a problem with putting them on the washing machine what so ever. Don't add softener. Usually a quick wash is fine, unless they R really dirty.

I personally wouldn't. The last pair I put in, on a cool wash, it melted the glue and they fell apart. They weren't cheap either. I just handwash mine now and leave them to soak for a while. I find they still come up as clean. They can also get damaged on the spin cycle, no matter wot u put them in the machine with.

I always put mine in the washing machine. I guess it depends on the material of the trainers. Mine always look great after. I wouldn't like to say a definat yes to your question because i wouldn't like to feel responsible if they shrunk or the colours run ect...

No I wouldn't again. I ruined the drum of the machine. Also it can take the leather from the front of the trainers and makes them look naff

Its not adviseable, but if you are going to do it, put them on a low wash and put them inside a pillow case, with the laces taken out.
