A urinary tract infection [UTI] will not stop your period from coming, this is an infection that effects your urinary track, i.e. where your pee comes out, it's caused when bacteria get up there, you often need antibiotics, cleaning yourself with salt water after you pee and drinking lots of water and cranberry juice can help as well. It has nothing to do with your period, so don't worry.
Your first period is normally light, however for some girls it can come on as full bleeding; it differs a lot from person to person.
Do NOT put Vaseline on your vagina or vulva!
Vaseline is petroleum jelly so not the best thing to put on your skin to begin with because of how it is made and also because it locks in moister rather than moisturise as people believe. Your vagina [internal genitals] and vulva [external genitals] are made up of mucosa, this is like skin but very delicate because it does not have the top layers like skin does to protect itself, it's pretty much the same as what is on the inside of your nose, instead it has lubrication to keep it safe. Vaseline will dry out the mucosa in your vagina and vulva, it will also trap dirt and bacteria there where it could cause an infection – wash it off, make sure only to use water to wash it off with, it may take a while to wash it all off this way but don't use soap to wash yourself with as this will cause an infection. Use the medicine your mother gave you, drink lots of water, and wash yourself with just water after you pee and whenever you go in the bath or shower.
There are a lot more options than tampons and pads; in fact all together there are about twenty different menstrual options;
Commercial tampons, Organic tampons, Soft tampons, Sponge tampons, Homemade tampons, Commercial pads, Organic pads, Cloth pads, Homemade pads, Padded panties, Padettes, Period blankets, Silicone bell-shaped menstrual cups, Rubber bell-shaped menstrual cups, Soft plastic diaphragm-shaped menstrual cups, Diaphragms used as menstrual cups, Homemade menstrual cups, Free-flow, Free-flow layering, Free-flow instinctive, Extraction, Toilet paper.
I'd personally recommend you stick to organic or cloth pads like Natracare http://www.natracare.com or Lunapads http://www.lunapads.com first then if you feel comfortable move to an internal menstrual option such as menstrual cups like Divacup – http://www.divacup.com
Tampons are very bad for vaginal health because they stop your vagina from cleaning itself, dry out the mucosa, keep bacteria in your vagina, and contain chemicals so they significantly increase risk of infections, TSS, irritation, vaginal splitting and chemical exposure. Commercial pads like Always are made from synthetics that keep air from getting to your vagina and contain chemicals that can both cause infections.
Have a talk to your mother when you get home, she SHOULD talk to you about these things and she SHOULD be able to tell you all you need to know - if she won't talk to you about it then try asking another grown up you can trust like your doctor, teacher, older sister, or school nurse.
When you get a little older you should be sure to do your own study because it is a very important you know these things, there are a lot of books and web sites that will be able to tell you all you need to know about your body and periods.
A site you may want to check out is Scarleteen, this is made for teens but a lot of adults use it too because it is really good, very body-positive, and isn't patronising, it also has a forum you may want to use as well rather than asking here - http://www.scarleteen.com

Well, the vaseline would explain the UTI. DO NOT DO THAT! for obvious reasons. You got medicine for the UTI I hope. Why not talk to that doctor? Call you doctor and tell them what you typed here...Your school nurse is another option. a phys ed teacher, a friend's mom you like? An uti does not have a thing to do with your period...
Stick with pads til the UTI clears up.
