I wondered why there were so many this year also. I used to be frightened of spiders and would have to ask someone remove them. Then one day while I was home alone with my new baby, the biggest fattest spider I have ever seen trundled across the floor. As I didn't want it going near my baby I just caught it and put it outside. Now I can catch and remove spiders no problem.

I was still frightened of daddy longlegs and used to wonder how anyone could catch them in their hand. I was forever being told how harmless they are, but it was the way they always came to me and drifted into my face with their long trailing legs. One day I had had enough and just took a deep breath and caught one in my hand and ignored the tickeling and put it outside. I thought it was the same one returning over and over again. Today I watched a few on the grass in the garden. Now I know what they were up to.

Daddy-long-legs are crane flies. These spend most of their life as grubs called leatherjackets buried under grass. (Unless starlings find them first). About this time of year, the grubs mature and the adult crane flies mate and lay eggs in the grass to start the cycle over again. Once they've done their stuff, they die.

If anyone's totally confused by this answer, it's because in some parts of the country daddy-long-legs is what you call a harvestman which is a type of spider.
