Katherine Blodgett was the first woman to graduate from Cambridge University with a Ph.D in physics and the first female scientist hired by General Electric's research lab. While there, she developed practical applications of monomolecular glass coatings, producing low-glare variants of glass.

Bette Nesmith Graham, aside from being the mother of Michael Nesmith of the Monkees, was a commerical artist and a typist who invented Liquid Paper (you know, that white corrective fluid used on typing).

Erna Schneider Hoover got her Ph.D from Yale and worked for Bell Laboratories, where she recieved one of the first patents ever issued for a piece of software. It was a method of controlling phone switching systems that allowed it to be more flexible and prioritize better during peak times, and is still in use today (for that matter, she's still alive too, so you can drop by and say thanks!).

Margaret Knight was the first woman to recieve a patent. It was for a machine that would automatically fold and glue paper into the paper bags that can be found in all grocery stores today. Her original prototype of the machine can be found in the Smithsonian Museum in Washington DC. She had a total of 87 patents, though none quite as successful as her first.

Stephanie Kwolek wanted to be a doctor, but ran out of money after getting a degree in chemistry from Carnegie Mellon University, so she went to work for DuPont labs and ended up inventing Kevlar. She now holds a total of 17 patents, and was inducted into the Inventors' Hall of Fame and recieved the National Medal of Technology.

And that's just a start! Yay women!

I think Florence Nightingale deserves a mantion here too. Very interesting life story. She used her abillity as a very advanced mathematician to save by now possibly millions of lives. That right all that statistical stuff doctors use was straight from her!

hang on I will just find a site........

What did Issac Newton invent?
He proposed great scientific theories, but to the best of my knowledge, he didn't actually invent anything.

Maria Slodowska-Curie. She came from Poland, but spent great part of her life in France. With help of her husband, Peter Curie, she invented radioactivity and managed to isolate two radioactive chemical elements; Radium and Polonium (names came from words Poland and radosc, which in polish language means "happiness") they were not known before and it was she who discovered them. And of course she invented the process of isolating radium..
She was given the Nobel Prize twice in 1903 (for inventing radioactivity) and in 1911 (for isolating pure Radium). As far as I know she is still the only women in history who was given the Nobel Prize two times.
