I think it is a good thing for women to have equal rights although that is not why we are there. As a former member of the Armed Forces I spent time in the Middle East and saw first hand the inequalities. It's their way of life and I'm not sure much is going to change in the regard.

You cannot change the value system of a culture by force. It cannot be done. Imperialist governments in the past tried to do it, and failed. THEN the population of the country in question did it largely by themselves.

You cannot possibly understand the culture of the middle east, the same as they can't understand the culture of impersonal greedy society-less globalisation that exists in the west. What do you suggest? That you send the population to a "re-education" camp and drum it into them that women are equal? Not going to happen. They have the right to believe what they want - even if what they believe is wrong in your eyes. EDUCATE them if you want, try to PERSAUDE them that women are equal, and maybe they'll listen. But you cannot force a belief system on a people, just as you cannot force a government on them without the country disolving into civil war. People need to make their own choices.

Just because they have different opinions to you it doesn't make them a lesser person than you - many of the "founding fathers" believed fervently in slavery, as did the writers of the Bible. Are they not entitled to their opinions, or do their opinions on that matter invalidate their opinions on every other thing?

The Mid East has been that way for a ka-billion years! Our being there is NOT going to change that in anyway, shape or form.
If a woman is raped in the Mid East she is killed for being a whore and bringing shame to the family. How could 'we' change that insanity??
It would help you to read more and learn more about that part of the world.
Our being in there is the US exerting our will on parts of the world that do not want us there. We are the Worlds Bullies - don't fool yourself cuz that is a fact! We might as well go to North Korea.
If we wanted to be someplace to make a difference or be true peace keepers we should be in Africa. They need & want our help!!!!!!!!

Yes, I like women and they are equal only in Israel. Girls now have schooling in both Iraq and Afghanistan. It's a tragedy how many here are against that basic right. This right and more, is now there dispite the ideology of our liberal extremists.

Maybe you should get your nose out of the Middle East and take care of your own back yard.

No, the Middle East changes on its own accord not ours. We just insulted them by sending a woman to deal w/ Israel and Hezbollah. Which made them think they weren't important enough to send a man. It is still a Man's world in the Middle East.

You would think liberals would be all for that. But no, that would mean potentially supporting something Bush is doing. I bet if we invaded Iran ONLY to give women equal rights, the liberals would have no problem with it. But, if it has anything to do with national security, then we're an imperialistic, fascist, evil menace.

But you're not. You are only giving Iraq the power to vote until the next dictator comes and takes over.
