This is at a public high school and I know that some of our band students will not be able to attend this trip even after all the candy bars, etc. are sold at fundraisers. The trip is a four day event a thousand miles away and is quite expensive. Is this a reasonable activity for a HS band?

My Senior year of High School we were invited to sing at Carnegie Hall...... which is a long way from south Texas. So yes. Trips to competitions or shows are a normal part of being involved in some school activities.

Is it fair? No..... but life rarely is. Look at this as a once in a ifetime opportunity.

Why not have more fundraisers? There are a lot of options that require very little money put in.

Have your band director talk to local banks and ask them to donate some money or even sponser a couple kids to go.

What about local stores? Ask them to donate money or sponser some kids. Ask them to donate items for a silent auction or raffle.

Have a yard sale!! Get all the band members and their families to donate items and have a huge one. Advertise it in the paper. That is a good fundraiser to raise a lot of money without having to spend a lot. The newspaper may even donate the ad space.

Don't get discouraged!!! You can raise the money.

Email me and I will give you a whole list of things ya'll could do to raise money. You can pass it on to your band director.

Good Luck!!!!

I've heard of a band going to Washington every year, so I think it's normal for this to happen. I would recommend planning it, and coming up with some more creative ways to earn money for it. Maybe set up a grant type thing-I'm not sure, but it can be done!

NO but schools still do it...They shouldn't but the directors usualy aonly think about the extra funding they will get for the band if they do well..
