This is at a public high school and I know that some of our band students will not be able to attend this trip even after all the candy bars, etc. are sold at fundraisers. The trip is a four day event a thousand miles away and is quite expensive. Is this a reasonable activity for a HS band?

I think schools go way overboard with these kinds of trips. Many parents will send their kids even though it is not in their budget. Others will not be able to attend. School activities should not be elitist. All children should be able to participate. I think if the school decides to sponsor such a trip, the school should be prepared to foot the bill.

If everyone can't afford it, than the school should be setting up multiple fundraisers in order to help pay for it.

I was in a dance class in High School and we did fundraisers every month to save up for trips like these.
Candy bars, Car Washes, Bike Marathons, Concerts etc.

Trust me. If you do get to go, these will be some of your best HS memories.

This trip sounds like it will be a lifetime memory for the students involved. Try approaching local bussiness for help especialy any large companys often time they have money for such causes. If there are only a few students that would need help you could rase the price a little for the others to give the few that can't afford it a scollarship for the trip.

not unless you get a corporate sponsor. However, it does weed out the have's from the havenots in your school, and give just another reason for cloques and bullying. find a local corporation willing to help foot the bill, or nobody should go. Or why not contact oprah, and other tv personalities who do this kind of charity work.

not really. the school should put together a fund raiser like a bake sale or sell candy bars or something. My old high school did that for our band.

The band director should have met with the parents before anything like this was finalized.
