So for $800 you are buying 40 square yards of carpet. A square yard is 27 square feet so you have a total of 1080 square feet of room. Divide that by the width of the room, 15 feet. Your room is 72 feet long.

BTW 15x72 is a bowling alley and should definitely have hardwood floors not carpet!

Just kidding, but it sounded good! Anyhow 800=40 square yards 40/ 5yards (15 feet) = 8 yards(24 feet)

a square yard is 3 feet by 3 feet, which equals 9 feet.
you need 40 square yards (800 dollars divided by 20 dollars per square yard)
ok, so if one square yard is 9 feet, then 40 square yards is 360 feet.
Length X Width = area
Length X 15 = 360
Length = 360/15
Length = 24 feet

It might be easiest to convert the width of the room to yards (since the cost is given in yards). Then try using algebra to solve the problem.

If the area of the room is calculated by:
A = LxW

Then the cost (in this case $800) would have been calculated by taking the total size of the room in square yards times $20 per square yard.

So the equation is:
LxW(area of the room)xP(price per square yard) = C(total cost)
or
LxWxP=C

Substitute the given values (leaving the length, since that's what you want to know!):

L x 5 (remember there's 3 ft for every yard, so 15/3) x $20 = $800

L x 5 x 20 = 800
L x 100 = 800
L = 800/100
L = 8 YARDS or 8x3 -> 24 FT

So the length of the room is 24 ft!

You can't convert feet to square yards. You can convert sqare feet into square yards though.
3 feet = 1 yard so...
3x3 feet squared = 1x1 yard squared therefore....
9 square feet = 1 square yard

$800/$20 = 40 therefore there are 40 square yards in room
15/3 = 5 so there are 5 yards in the width
40/5 = 8 then there must be 8 yards in length and
8 x 3 = 24 there is 24 feet in length

to double check your answer:
15 feet x 24 feet = 360 square feet, and knowing that a square yard has 9 square feet, divide 360 square feet by 9 square feet to result in 40 square yards. 40 square yards X $20/square yard results in $800.

15 ft = 5 yds. Since it is $800, $800 divided by $20/sq. yd equals 40 square yds. Therefore, the length of the room is 8 yards, or 24 feet. (3 ft = 1 yd)

First, you need to make the feet into yards. 3 Feet = 1 Yard, so 15 ft. divided by 3 = 5 Yards. Now, you have to find the variable. It basically goes like this.

Room Width by Length
VVV
5x(L) = S
S=Square yards required to make $800

Therefore, $20 x 40 equals 800$, so we need 40 square yards.
5 x 8 = 40
40=Amount of square yards.

Therefore, in order to make feet into square yards, first make the feet into yards, then make the yards into square yards.

well there are 9 sq ft in a sq yd, 800/20=40, so 40 sq yd= 360 sq ft, 360/15= 24

The length of the room is 24 ft

Hope i helped =D
