My mother collected these stamps and she passed away in 1985, so all the stamps are post 1985. I have been carrying them around for years and would like to know what value they carry and to maybe see them go to a true stamp collector.

Please take a look at the detailed advice at http://www.virtualstampclub.com/inherit.html - it is exactly the information you need.

Have fun - I hope you will decide to keep the stamps and add to your mother's collection. Then the $$$$ worth will be unimportant.

As a previous collector - if all the stamps are 1985 and newer then probably not. If they are cancelled and newer than 1985 then definately not. If they are blocks of stamps (still attached to each other) have them checked by a stamp shop. I still have some stamps from early 1900's that are worth about 0.10 each. The only thing you should do is check every stamp and see if any have errors like 1/2 stamp printing is off etc. Seperate these, if any, and have them checked seperate from the main collection.
Other than that, you could put the box away and give them to your children (they were grandma's). It may give them a hobby.
Coins are much better though.

Google groups has a pretty good stamp forum alt.collecting.stamps with some pretty knowledgable people that might be able to help. You could also search eBay to see what people are bidding (if they have the same items as you). There probably lots of books and websites with information as well.

http://www.askphil.org lets you search for a stamp dealer in your local area. Go to any of them to get your stamps appraised. You may want to go to more than one, just to get a few appraisals. If you're interested in selling the stamps, I would recommend Mystic Stamp Company (http://www.mysticstamp.com).
