I'm moving soon, and I'd love to have my hermit crab in my carry-on luggage. The airline (Nortwest Airlines) permit certain types of pets, but I have not read any regulations regarding hermit crabs on their site.

Has anyone done this? Could a crab in the cabin be considerederd a hazard? Surely no passengers would have hermit crab allergies?

Thank you.

Call the local airport that you are flying out of and entering into to make sure the airports and all secruity checkpoints will allow shuch a thing, then call the airline directly.

There is no such thing as hermit crab allergies so there is no worry with that, but keeping the conditions for him or her ideal is going to be difficult.
Temp and humdity need to stay within range and you must make sure it will not get bumped around. Best bet would be to pack it like you are shipping it but then put the box unsealled into your carryon, since they will check it.

Being that it is an only crab and going to be subjected to all of this stress, be very prepared for dropped limbs or even death. Hermit crabs always do better when there is more than one. They are wild crustaceans that live in colonies and never alone.

This is kind of wierd, actually. Not too long ago, a good friend of mine went on vacation to Florida with her family. While there, her mother bought her and her brother both Hermit Crabs as a gift to remember the trip by.

Unfortunatly, when she tried to take it on the plane to bring it home, the airline would not permit that her or her brother bring them with. They had to leave the Hermit Crabs there at the airport, because they didn't know anyone locally that could care for them.

She was very upset by this, calling it Animal Cruelty, being that she believed that the woman at the airport threw them in the garbage.

I would most definatly get a hold of a local airport and ask them about their rules and regulations regarding animals. That way, if you cannot take them with you, you can find a friend or family member to care for them.

Good Luck!

If I did I would get one of those "LIVE LOBSTER TRANSPORT BOXES," Then I would pack him in ice in that box so he got drowsy and they would never know the difference.
