You should not have unprotected sex for at LEAST 1-3 months or until a sperm sample count comes back conclusive that the sperm total is ZERO.
It is not unheard of for a vas defrens to reattach in the early days after a vasectomy. Further, sperm can live in the vas defrens for a good long time - it will take many ejaculations before they're all washed away by the seminal fluids.
He, in the mean time, should not have sex until he is told by the doc that it is ok to do so. The area will be tender for a while, and the risk of creating an unpleasant situation (swelling/edema) is high in the first few days.

My husband had a vasectomy. It was about a week before we had sex. Make sure he wear nice loose pants. My husband wore jeans then went for a two hour drive. He had tears streaming down his face. The sperm is gone straight after the procedure but his body makes seeman. So when you make love he still ejaculates but there no sprerm in it.

If I recall correctly, he should wait at least a week, maybe 2 weeks before having sex again. Having sex right away creates the risk that the stitches will come out. OUCH! (I know someone that happened to.).
As for sperm count, your husband's urologist will probably ask him to come to the office about a month after the procedure so that his semen can be checked for the presence of sperm.

It will take about two to four weeks. Better if he masturbates to get out his sperms.
Years after, vasectomy produce in some cases some consecuences as follow:
* Some kind of globs in testicles conducts.
* Varicose veins in testicles zone.

Should be able to have sex in a few days, but his sperm count should be checked up to 6 or 8 months if you plan on having sex without using protection and you don't want to end up pregnant.

I believe they want you to run a few off with testing before being safe. Use a condom for a couple of weeks.
