This slang term originated in about 1970. At that time, i.e. pre the widespread use of the Internet, slang terms often circulated at street level for many years before being adopted by anyone who felt inclined to write them down. That's clearly not the case any longer of course and any word or phrase that is widely known is dateable quite precisely via website logs.

The first citation in print is C. Wielgus and A. Wolff's, 'Back-in-your-face Guide to Pick-up Basketball', 1986:

"My bad, an expression of contrition uttered after making a bad pass or missing an opponent."

Probably more than you really wanted to know. There is even more info. on the webpage.

I'm sure there will be movies made about Obama's presidency. I can't tell you when they will come out, though. I wouldn't even predict that Hollywood will come up with something more imaginitive for a title than "Hussein" Also, the only reason that Walker or W came into play was to distinguish son from father. Had there not been a first President Bush, I'll bet that we would have never heard the "W" used.

I think the term was around before clueless (I loved this movie, though I had a strong disliking for valley girls >:~P)
I know what you mean by the fact that you feel wierd saying it. For me it has something to do with the fact that I associate with different types of people, some are less mature than others and those are the people who understand 'my bad'. I like the phrase because it's a quick way to say it before someone gets a chance to say "It's all your fault!"

definately not, even though the movie did make a memorable moment of it, "my bad" was popular before the film released. I do say it from time to time. sometimes completely jokingly, rarely in all seriousness, and often in cher's tone of voice.

what i did steal from this scene in the movie is "i totally paused." I definately only know that phrase from clueless.

Nope, because I remember saying that word years before that movie ever came out. Yes, I still use it.
