The guidelines I was given by the midwife were no more than 1-2 units, once or twice a week. That's one pint of beer, two small glasses of wine, or two single measures of a spirit.

Absolutely not!
In the first three months, all the major body systems are developing - a very critical period.
The remainder of the pregnancy, we don't know how much alcohol is "safe". Fetal alcohol syndrome has been seen in cases where the mother drank excessively, and in cases when the mother drank only a little.
If you aren't familiar with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, it involves physical deformity and/or mental retardation. Look it up - do a little research, and then decide how important that daily drink is to you. You might want to consider giving up alcohol entirely. After the baby is born, you need to be at your best to be a good mom. That doesn't include judgment clouded by alcohol.

Absolutley not. Once you find out you are pregnant (generally 6wks gestation +) - it is not okay.

Everything you eat / drink at this point is being fed into your child. Besides all the neurological, physical problems that can occur, it could lead to your child becoming a "dry" or "live" alcoholic.

Please. Do not drink if you are pregnant.

Well...the problem with this is nobody knows what level of alcohol is ok or not for a developing baby. Do you really want to chance a baby with fetal alcohol syndrome? Your baby will 100% NOT have fetal alcolhol syndrome if you do NOT drink.

In your second trimester and third trimester having a drink (beer or wine) occassionally is OK. Once a week. Tops. Drinking every day cannot be good for your baby.

NO!!!!!!!
any kind of alcoholic beverage on a regular basses can cause fetal alcahol syndrome. I can't believe anyone would endanger their baby for a little alcohol. If you cant have more than one whats the since in it at all.

Ann is exactly right. Nobody knows for sure how harmful it can be, so just don't do it.

If it is hard for you to imagine not having a drink every day, then you should be honest with your doctor and talk about it.

Not at all, besides the neorological effects of alcohol on the baby, just the fact that you will be dehydrated all the time is also dangerous.
