I agree with ironhand sounds like air in the lines probably got there when you changed the pump. Does it do this all the time or just the first time after replacing the pump? If it does this all the time you might want to make sure the fuel lines got tightened and are creating a seal. If you have air leaking into your fuel system it will usually run rough when you first start it?

When you turn on the key to start the car, the PCM turns on the pump for somewhere around 2 - 5 seconds, and if it doesn't detect engine revolutions, it turns it back off.
The first two times it turned on, it was probably pumping air, and because air can be compressed, you couldn't hear the pump.
After the third time, the air was purged from the system, and it began to pump against a "head" of pressure, and then you could hear the pump driving against a solid head of fuel pressure. Not all that uncommon.

If it is a newer fuel injected vehicle, it has an electric fuel pump. Somewhere in the fuel system there is a pressure switch. This switch may be malfunctioning.
Hard to give any more information with so little information in the question. Sorry
