There are two theories of relativity. General and Special. An overall theory of Relativity was origionally theorised by Galileo Galilee. However it is Albert Einstein that takes the credit. It was Albert Einstein that proved that Gravity, Acceleration and Time are all connected.

Just for your information, Special Relativity is about how travelling at speeds very close to the speed of light (I mean about 75% before anything noticeable starts to happen) time appears to run slower for certain observers.

General Relativity is the most complicated theory. This theory deals with the effects of Gravity (and acceleration) on time. A quick example, an observer caught in an intense gravitational field, i.e. close to the surface of the Sun, would see that time around him is running very fast, whereas an observer outside the Sun would see that time for the observer inside the Sun is running very slowly.

The theory of relativity, or simply relativity, refers specifically to two theories: Albert Einstein's special relativity and general relativity.

The term "relativity" was coined by Max Planck in 1908 to emphasize how special relativity (and later, general relativity) uses the principle of relativity.

A man sits with a pretty girl for an hour and it seems shorter than a minute. But tell that same man to sit on a hot stove for a minute, it is longer than any hour. That's relativity.

Conventional history attributes it to Albert Einstein. However, a series of letters between Einstein and his wife (a very capable scientist in her own right) suggest that she was just as much responsible for coming up with the theory than he was.

Clearly the answer is Einstien. I would like to point out the fact that like most great advances in science, Einstien built his ideas off of the work of many other scientists that came before him as well as his own experiments and ideas. The puzzle pieces were pretty much there, Einstien put them together, which in itself, is a great feat.
