I'm trying to find a easy way to determine the difference between High Density and Low Density of can liners. If I'm wanting a 24x24 8 mic can liner is that low or high density? Why? If I'm wanting a 24x24 .65 mil can liner is that low or high density? Why?

If I recall what Pops told me(PHD Chem Engineer). Well this much I know. Them grocery store bags that make a noise when handled are one type. You basic trash bag or saran wrap sort of thing are another. If I remember correctly the noisy ones are high density and the quieter ones are low density. It all in what they are made of PPT vs PET or some such acronym.

Low Density Vs High Density

In the measurments, the mil shows how thick the bag is. The higher the MIL measurments, the better. Whole numbers are high density. Numbers starting with decimals are low density.

While the numbers do indicate thickness, your question was about density -- which I think is something else all together. The density seems to be more related to what the item is made from, not the actual thickness of the end product. This information may be more technical than you want, but here it is:

Plastic No. 4 / Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
Description: Used predominately in film applications due to its ease of processing, strength, toughness, flexibility, relative transparency, and ease of sealing, and its barrier to moisture, making it popular for use in applications where heat sealing is necessary.

Common Uses: Dry cleaning bags, produce bags, trash can liners, bread and frozen food bags, food storage containers, squeezable bottles, e.g. honey, mustard. LDPE is also used to manufacture some flexible lids and bottles and it is used in wire and cable applications.

Recycled Products Include: Shipping envelopes, garbage can liners, floor tile, furniture, film and sheet, compost bins, paneling, trash cans, landscape timber, lumber

Plastic No. 2 / High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
Description: HDPE has stiffness, strength, toughness, resistance to chemicals and moisture, permeability to gas, ease of processing, and ease of forming.
Common Uses: Milk, water, juice, cosmetic, shampoo, dish and laundry detergent bottles; yogurt and margarine tubs; cereal box liners; grocery, trash and retail bags.

HDPE is used to make bottles for milk, juice, water and laundry products. Unpigmented bottles are translucent, have good barrier properties and stiffness, and are well suited to packaging products with a short shelf life such as milk. Because HDPE has good chemical resistance, it is used for packaging many household and industrial chemicals such as detergent and bleach. Pigmented HDPE bottles have better stress crack resistance than unpigmented HDPE bottles.

Recycled Products Include: Liquid laundry detergent, shampoo, conditioner and motor oil bottles; pipe, buckets, crates, flower pots, garden edging, film and sheet, recycling bins, benches, dog houses, plastic lumber, floor tiles, picnic tables, fencing.

Hope this answers your question!!

The .65 is the decimal percentage of one inch. (65% of one inch) The higher the #,the THICKER the plastic.
