Were they dead? Was it a paralell universe? I think I missed the point.
Hubby and I were debating on this.

Yup, it was sad.

I was leaning more twards them being dead and that they died on the road (which is why the three were all hurt). It just that the weird stuff started before that accident (I think) when Sharon was having those nightmeres.

Go to the website for silenthill.com they will kinda tell you about it ....I was the same way I didn't know it is all based on a video game, I was like, WELL.......Are they or Aren't they.....Basically from what I gather is they are not dead....they are in the ash-world still, which I guess leaves it open for a sequel..... There are several silent hill games. This was a lose interpretation of game one.....believe Me it's still confusing......What you need on top of the website is some one who knows these games inside and out...then send them here to explain things to me!!!!

Sharon, Rose and Cybil did NOT die in the car accident in the beginning. You know this because at the end of the movie, you see Chris and Officer Gucci discussing how Rose's car was found, HOWEVER, Rose and Sharon's bodies were not found. If they would have died in the accident, dont you think the bodies would have been found in the deserted cars? The ending is that Rose and Sharon are stuck in the evil dimension of Silent Hill. Therefore they are not ghosts, just trapped in another dimension."

The story in Silent Hill is a long one and has been divided in several parts with different directions. In the game you have the real notion of what I mean.
The film is just like a glimpse of the beginning of the story.
Just like the matrix you only found out who was "the one" in the last film. This movie is just the first part, until the second part comes out they stuck in two different parallel universes.

Rose, Sharon/Alessa, and Dahlia are the only ones to survive the carnage. As Rose and Sharon/Alessa exit, Dahlia asks why she was spared. Rose, echoing Cybil Bennet's belief, says that “A mother is God in the eyes of a child."

Rose and Sharon/Alessa enter their car, which now starts, to drive out of Silent Hill and to their home. Their world, however, is still shrouded in fog, including Brahams and their hometown. Christopher is shown napping on the living room sofa as it rains outside. Rose and Sharon — still within the fog — enter the house. Rose, still trapped in the shifted world, sits down opposite where Christopher is as he sleeps in the real world. He awakens, sensing his wife's perfume once again, and rushes toward the open front door, hoping to see Rose. This hope proves ill as there is no one there and Christopher stares blankly into the rain.

Hi there I have been explaining this to all of my family, here goes, the wife doesn't know she is dead, they all three, the mom,the cop and daughter died on the road. Therefore she can't move on. And the spirit of the mom(the one they burned) went into the little girl and she doesn't want to be dead, not parallel, purgatory..the husband feels her presence, death can't shatter love.

they were tainted...therefore, they remained in the tainted realm that's why at the end, there's sunshine in the husband's world and it's foggy with ash in the world where they're in, but I agree. It does give the appearance of a parallel universe. Mother is God in the eyes of a child...

They died (the mom, daughter & cop) when they had the auto accident, that's why his hubby could never find them and they never saw eachother when they got to the house.

That movie was dumb.

I thought it was a good movie until that sucky ending! I just rented that thing last night and once it was over, I sat staring at the TV like DUH? The ending messed up the whole movie and I hated it!

You didn't miss the ending, there is no ending. You have to play the game to realize that.
