The "American dream" is an illusion or we'd all be rich and/or successful. Poverty, violence and a declining middle class are all proof that there is no such thing.

You are living the American Dream EVERYDAY you wake up and are a citizen in the greatest nation ever to exist on the face of the Earth...except maybe Atlantis...that place must have been cool..swimming around like Aquaman.
But seriously that American Dream is in every Americans reach......its whether or not you choose to grasp it.
The secret is Enthusiasm, Optimism, Hard Work and Enthusiam.....and you could always use a little Enthusiasm
Its not really a secret ....... just tough to do.
Good luck

If you mean starting out poor, and ending up having a good prosperous life, check out most Republican Politicians.
Most of them in the House came from poverty or lower middle class.
It's no secret.
Work hard, save and invest. Work two jobs if you have to. Don't blow money. Education helps.
Listen to Rush Linbaugh. He roots poor people on all the time, so they can improve their lives.
Study Supreme Court Justice, Clarence Thomas. The Democrats tried to destroy him, but couldn't.
Read black columnist, Walter Williams.

likely you mean the United Statesian dream.
If you don't... What is the 'American' dream? does a person from Canada dreams of achieving the same thing that another in Bolivia?
If you do mean the United Statesian dream this might be of interest to you. There is no such a thing as ‘American’ nationality, America is not a nation America is a continent with many nations in it. The US never named itself the name of the United States is a designation it comes from the end of the Declaration of Independence, "WE, therefore, the Representatives of the UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, in GENERAL CONGRESS, Assembled...". The preamble to the U.S. Constitution reiterated the phrase: "We the People of the United States..." (The authors of these two documents probably used the phrase "united states" in place of a list of colonies/states because they remained uncertain at the time of drafting which colonies/states would sign off on the sentiments therein.) The geographic term "America" specifies the states' home on the American continent.
It is therefor incorrect to refer to US citizens as Americans with the intent of denoting citizenship, or the United States as America with the intent of denoting a nation. Americans have a term for US citizens, we are called United Statesians by the rest of Americans, to say American with the intent of denoting citizenship or America when we mean the United States reflects poorly on our attitude towards the 70% of Americans that are not United Statesians.

There is no one answer... people do it in alot of different ways---
Your own business
Rising up the corp. latter
Inventing something, writing a book, etc. etc.
The idea behind the "American Dream" is that there are many ways (opportunities) to be successful and get ahead. And, compared to many other places, fewer things to keep you down.
