"How Do I Clean and Restore Slate Surrounds on My Fireplace?
Wash with S p i c & S p a n (which contains a TSP solution), mixed with water. Clean off solution thoroughly. To make it shine, use furniture polish on completely clean slate to restore it to a glossy black finish. Do not use wax, which is affected by heat."
The 2nd link below is to a site that gives tips for cleaning heavily stained slate, which is much more intensive -- hope you don't need it!!

Use a NATURAL STONE CLEANER.You can find it at any Home Improvement store.It is by the tile dept.Just follow the directions.
