Go to Lowes.com and HomeDepot.com and check out their online paint and decorating ideas. Don't go overboard with patterns. Use a light neutral colored paint instead of wallpaper. Keep it simple and restful. If it's too busy looking it will look cluttered. Use light colored furniture, paint it if needed. Second hand stores have perfectly good furniture and since the pieces aren't heirloom pieces there's no reason not to paint them. Don't use stark white paint though, choose a creamy white. The same websites have info on faux finishes. Dark furniture can work if you use it sparingly... like a dark headboard with other pieces painted off white. Place the bed so it is the focal point when walking in the room if possible. If not possible, make a window the focal point with a dresser under it and coordinating pictures or wall hangings on each side of the window. Use coordinating colors, fabrics and patterns so they compliment each other. If you live in a cold climate, warm colors like pink, yellow, gold, cream, and peach with touchs of green make a bedroom cozy and inviting. If you live in a hot climate, soft greens, blues and whites feel calming and cooler. Always start with your fabric first because your wall color, and accessories will be chosen to coordinate with the fabric. Have fun and happy decorating!

There are books in your library that will help. Internet can too.
Here is my take, a small room can be made to look spacious by hanging some mirrors in the room. Some wallpaper with scenery can also do the trick.
Rest is up to you. You need what you need, but stay away from clutter of non essential items.
