I recently started using tampons. When I took it out, I felt a sharp, stinging pain. I was more surprised than actually pained, but still, it is unpleasant. I was just wondering if this is normal--maybe it has something to do with the hymen? The tampon was pretty saturated, so it didn't have anything to do with dryness.

Actually it may have everything to do with dryness, remember tampons absorb fluids, this is not just the menses but also discharge that helps not only clean your vagina but also helps keep the mucosa moist. The mucosa in your vagina is similar to the mucosa in your nose, it is like skin but without the top layers to protect it, so when it gets dried out it easily splits and get irritated, more so if you are using commercial tampons such as Tampax that contain chemicals and bleach harmful to your body that could cause irritation or allergic reactions.

Size can affect things as well because the bigger the tampon the wider they are so more difficult to insert or remove, particularly when you are not relaxed. Different brands are made different ways as well, most brands are made by cutting horizontal strips of fleece then rolling into swiss roll type shapes, where as others are made by cutting diagonal strips and constructing into a tampon shape – this effects whether a tampon expands lengthways or widthways, lengthways often results in further increased menstrual cramps (tampons already adding to the problem of menstrual cramps and heavy bleeding) where as widthways can increase bloating feeling as well as make them wider so more difficult to remove.

If your hymen is still in tact then removal of a tampon can be painful, sometimes even without the hymen being in tact internal menstrual products such as tampons or menstrual cups can catch on the broken hymen causing some discomfort. If your hymen is still in tact then it is possible for it to break from tampon use and breaking the hymen can cause pain.

Even though the tampon was saturated it could have been a dryness problem because all your moisture was absorbed in the tampon away from your skin. However you might be a little sensitive to the chemicals in the brand you are using. Go to the healthfood store and buy natural ones that are chemical-free.. Never use the deodorized ones. They do nothing but irritate.

there could be a few reasons. it could be the wrong size and or shape. some are just not very comfortable to even wear. They make some that are slimmer and more comfortable. 2 it is possible that you did tear the hymen or at least came into contact with it therefore making it even more uncomfortable.

You may want to use some of the more slender tampon products out there like or one made especially for teens. If you continue to have discomfort it just may not be the way to go for you, or you may wish to talk to your doctor about it.

Did this just happen once? It could have been a "nerve" reaction. If you are not completely relaxed when inserting or removing them, there can be some discomfort. You might want to consult your Dr. about this. Any sharp pain is something to have checked out.

First rule of wearing tampons: Relax
Second Rule: If it makes you uncomfortable don't wear them. There are other alternatives out there. I have heard threes something like a cup or something like that. I don't know too much about it, but it might be worth looking into.

Maybe you are just not used to it. I alternate the use of tampons and pads, and have gone a few periods not using tampons, whenever i use one again, it does feel weird

Could be that the hymen broke, it is common for tampon users. Just continue with them, and if it doesn't happen again, it probably was. If it does happen again, try another form or protection, or see the doc.

TAMPONS ARE BAD FOR YOUR HEALTH - so from time to time you WILL have problems, it's only to be expected, you might be better off using something different like pads or cups as they are much safer so not likely to cause as many problems for you.

Which kind did you use? Brand can make all the difference. They are shaped differently. Personally, I hate Tampax. They hurt when you take them out. I use Kotex. No discomfort at all.
