A problem is something you work on...work towards solving it.
An excercise is more of a demonstration more physical, you may also be working towards solving it but it is the act you do to solve it.

An exercise is designed to make your mind work or "exercise" to get the answer. In an exercise you have to figure out what the problem (or equation) is in order to solve it. In a problem, you already have the equation.

In an exercise you play out all the different possible problems that you believe may occur. When a problem does happen it isn't`t that easy, many unforeseen circumstances may happen that were not planed for in an exercise.

A problem is something that you solve and an exercise is something you work through, maybe like prove this theroy is an exercise and solve this equation is a problem.
